‘Castelao e Outras’ is a greatly typical Portuguese red wine made by the small artisan winery Quinta da Serradinha. Born from an organic production approach, this label mainly derives, as suggested by its name, from the indigenous grape variety Castelão, to which smaller percentages of other local black grape varieties are associated: “Castelão e outras” indeed means “Castelão and others”. The Castelão, also called Periquita and João de Santarém, is one of the most widespread grapes throughout Portugal, appreciated for its tough and pleasantly rustic character.
The Quinta da Serradinha ‘Castelão e Outras’ is produced from a rich blend of Castelão (60%), Touriga Nacional (15%), Alfrocheiro (15%) and Tinta Miuda (10%). The vineyards, consisting of old vines cultivated according to organic farming principles, are rooted in clay-limestone soils with a concurrent presence of sand. After manual harvesting and careful sorting, the grapes are destemmed and vinified in red, with alcoholic fermentation without temperature control and 10 days of maceration on the skins. Once the fermentation process is complete, the liquid is transferred to oak barrels for about 24 months before being bottled without undergoing filtration.
The Vinho Tinto ‘Castelão e Outras’ from Quinta da Serradinha has a ruby red color with garnet reflections. Intense on the nose with aromas of flowers and berries that blend with balsamic and spicy notes. Balanced and structured taste, with a savory and vividly tannic flavor development. A bottle skilled in combining elegance and contained rusticity, perfect pairing with roasted or grilled meats.
