Almondo Giovanni

Among the areas of greatest viticultural vocation for Nebbiolo, a grape variety that is as noble as it is difficult to cultivate and work with, Roero undoubtedly occupies a prominent position. In this hilly slice of Piedmont, located on the opposite bank of the Tanaro River from the famous Langhe, Giovanni Almondo has established itself over the decades in terms of value and quality, configuring itself as one of the most emblematic winemaking realities of the area. The Almondos are recorded in the registers of the municipality of Montà as early as the 14th century, highlighting the strong link between the family and the territory. The estate, which has always been run on a strictly family basis, has some of the best vineyards in Montà, the northern end of the Roero subdivided into two areas, differing in altitude and soil characteristics.

In the higher part of the commune the vineyards benefit from acid soils with abundant sand and stones, while the lower part of Montà has more calcareous soils, rich in nutrients. The vines grown are the traditional ones of the area: Nebbiolo and Arneis, the former raised on the limestone soils located between 230 and 280 meters above sea level, while the latter, from old vines, distributed in the sandy high part, at about 390 meters above sea level. The remaining varieties processed by the Almondos include other Lower Piedmont grapes such as Barbera, Freisa and Brachetto, as well as Riesling. In 2015 the new winery was inaugurated, which consists of functional rooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology intended mostly for the vinification of Arneis, in order to preserve the absolute integrity of its varietal aromas.

The wines of the Giovanni Almondo winery all play on finesse and typicality, with fragrant and mineral profiles for the Arneis and a balsamic, fresh and complex character for the Roero reds. The top cru are represented by the Roero Arneis 'Le Rive del Bricco delle Ciliegie' and the Roero 'Bric Valdiana', icing on the cake of a truly sublime and elegant range, an authentic expression of the area.
