Bodegas del Rio

Mastering the Art of Sherry and Family Tradition in Andalusia
Region Andalusia (Spagna)
Vineyard hectares 7
Address Bodegas del Rio e hijos, Av. de Huelva, 91B - 11540 Bonanza, Cadice (Spagna)

Bodegas Del Rio is an Andalusian winery specializing in the production of delicious Jerez, also known as sherry, a fortified wine with a name coined by the English. For many years, the Del Rio family supplied wine to major cellars in the region, working as "almacenista," before deciding to start marketing their own products. Today, the winery is led by the Del Rio brothers, who have taken over from their father Angel, the founder of the estate.

The vineyards of Bodegas Del Rio, spread across 7 hectares, are located near the mouth of the Guadalquivir River, just a few meters from the sea. This creates the ideal conditions for the growth of the Palomino Fino grape, the only variety cultivated by the family, which benefits from the warm and breezy microclimate of the area. The plants are specifically located in the Miraflores district, one of the most renowned areas of Sanlúcar de Barrameda. The microclimate created by the simultaneous influence of both the sea and the river is perfect for the development of the flor yeasts, which form a layer on the surface of the wine in the empty barrels, protecting the liquid from uncontrolled oxidation. Additionally, as the yeasts ferment, they produce distinctive aromas. Once fermentation is complete, the process of fortification begins, which involves adding a certain amount of wine alcohol. The traditional Solera method is then used for aging, where a series of wooden casks are stacked, and each year’s wine is blended, from the oldest to the newest, resulting in a premium reserve that contains dozens of different vintages.

A specialty of Bodegas Del Rio is Manzanilla Sherry, a dry type of sherry produced exclusively in the Sanlúcar de Barrameda area, considered one of the most prestigious within the denomination. In addition to Manzanilla, the Del Rio family also produces Jerez in the Amontillado and Oloroso styles. Overall, the wines of the winery stand out for their bold, savory, and maritime character, as well as for their ethereal aromas, typical of the denomination.
