'Kalch' Bergmannhof 2021

Bergmannhof's Kålch is a fine red wine, made from international grape varieties that are, however, able to convey the mountain character very effectively. Cabernet Franc and Merlot are vinified in open vats, partly with stems, and then matured for a long time in tonneaux. The wine is bottled without clarification or filtration and matures a further 2 years in the bottle. Very intense and juicy, dominated by hints of dark fruit with herbaceous and balsamic sensations on the finish. Velvety on the palate, it is however very tannic and intense

'KALCH' BERGMANNHOF 2021 DESCRIPTION

The "Kalch" from the Bergmannhof family winery is a South Tyrolean Bordeaux-style blend with a rich and velvety personality that expresses the characteristics of both the original grape varieties and the terroir. The name "Kalch" derives from the particularly calcareous matrix of the soil on which the grapes grow. This factor contributes to the elegance and aromatic intensity of the wine as well as to its valuable structural framework.

The Bergmannhof "Kalch" is a blend of the Cabernet Franc (70%) and Merlot (30%) grape varieties, which are cultivated in the municipality of Eppan an der Weinstraße, particularly in the St. Paul district. The soils on which the vines, which are up to 30 years old, grow consist of gravel and clay with a high concentration of limestone and very stony sections. Manual harvesting takes place between the end of September and the beginning of October, followed by red vinification with 30% whole bunches. Fermentation takes place in open wooden barrels with indigenous yeasts, accompanied by a 20-day maceration on the skins. This is followed by complete malolactic fermentation and 24 months of ageing on the fine lees in new oak barrels, at the end of which the wine is bottled without being clarified or filtered beforehand. The final release takes place after a further 24 months in the bottle.

The Bergmannhof "Kalch" Bordeaux blend has a dark ruby red colour. The aroma spectrum offers lively notes of cherry, blueberry and sweet violet, complemented by nuances of sweet spices such as vanilla and varietal hints of green pepper. The sip is intense and very warm, full-bodied but with gentle tannins, characterised by a lingering finish.
