Contrada P from Passopisciaro Winery is a luxurious, elegant and complex red wine produced on Etna from old vines more than 80 years old. This label is made from pure Nerello Mascalese grapes from the Contrada Porcaria cru, one of the most vocated areas of the entire production territory that gravitates around Mount Etna. The vineyards, located at an altitude between 600 and 700 meters, are north-facing and trained using the alberello method on fine, deep soils composed of the oldest lava flows. The winery, which, thanks to the foresight of its owner Andrea Franchetti, former owner of Tenuta di Trinoro in Tuscany, was one of the first to believe in the Etnean Renaissance and invest in the area, carries on a discourse of great attention to quality and respect for the uniqueness of the territory.
Terre Siciliane Contrada P from Passopisciaro is made from grapes harvested by hand in the second half of October, maintaining very low yields per hectare. After gentle crushing and destemming of the bunches, the resulting must is fermented on its lees in stainless steel tanks for about 15 days with light maceration on the skins. This is followed by racking and ageing of the wine, which takes place in large oak barrels for a period of about 18 months.
Contrada Porcaria from the Passopisciaro winery shows a bright ruby red colour to the eye, with hints of ripe red fruit and berries on the nose, including cherry, blackberry and raspberry, citrus and floral notes of violets, finishing with spicy, balsamic and wild herb aromas. In the mouth, it is rich, juicy and full-bodied, with fine tannins of pleasant persistence and a finish characterized by intense minerality. This Passopisciaro red is truly a great terroir wine with distinctive characteristics.
