Elio Altare's Barbera d'Alba is an elegant interpretation of this historic grape variety that has been part of everyday life in Piedmont for centuries. Too often dismissed as a simple, immediately drinkable wine, in the hands of a great vigneron, even Barbera can rise to the level of a fine wine, capable of expressing good aromatic complexity, a pleasing balance of taste and beautiful persistence. Following his personal style, Altare matures the wine in used barriques in order to soften the exuberance and find the right expressive balance.
Barbera d'Alba is one of Elio Altare's most interesting expressions. It comes from grapes grown in La Morra, on calcareous marl soils rich in sand. The estate is managed with great agronomic care, without the use of synthetic chemical substances and with the utmost respect for nature, with the aim of obtaining healthy, ripe grapes. In the cellar, work is carried out to make the most of the characteristics of the raw material with minimal intervention in the vinification process. At the end of the harvest, the grapes are sent for fermentation in temperature-controlled rotofrmentaori, with maceration on the skins for 3 or 4 days. Before release, the wine rests in used French oak barriques for 5 months.
Elio Altare's Barbera d'Alba confirms the high level of the red range of this innovative Langhe winery. The wine has a vivid and intense red-purple colour. The nose expresses a bouquet characterised by aromas of ripe cherries, small dark berries, black cherries, plums, hints of humus and sweet spices. On the palate it is medium structured, with a juicy, lively fruitiness, a fine tannic texture and a fresh, savoury finish.
