With its traditional production approach, Fattoria di Sammontana ranks among the most authentic wineries in the Chianti area of the Florentine Hills. The history of the winery, once owned by the famous Florentine Medici family and later by the canons of San Lorenzo, officially began in 1870 within the municipality of Montelupo Fiorentino with the purchase of the estate by Polish nobleman Michele Dzieduszycki. Two generations later, his nephew Massimo strongly directed the farm towards quality wine and olive oil production. Today the fourth generation is at the helm, skilled in preserving and enhancing the long tradition of the place through a winemaking philosophy that embraces the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture.

Fattoria di Sammontana consists of around 15 hectares of vineyards and 3,000 olive trees. The vineyards, located on the rolling hills behind the Arno Valley, lie between 70 and 150 metres above sea level and are planted on soils of alluvial origin that have a large amount of skeleton. In the field, organic and biodynamic farming practices are followed, adopting techniques such as green manure and using biodynamic preparations such as horn manure and hornsilica, with the aim of favouring soil fertility and the wellbeing of the plants. Phytosanitary defence involves the exclusive use of copper and sulphur in small quantities and the harvests are carried out entirely by hand. In the cellar, the white berry varieties are vinified in steel tanks while the black berry varieties are vinified in cement tanks. Selected yeasts and oenological additives are not used during the process and clarification and filtration are not carried out. The maturation of the different wines takes place in steel, in terracotta amphorae or in wooden barrels, large or small, depending on the bottle in question.

The labels offered by Fattoria di Sammontana range from ready-to-drink whites and reds such as the Rosso 'Alberese', a blend of Sangiovese and Trebbiano Toscano, to the more typical Chianti and Vin Santo. The 'Primo Fuoco' line includes a white wine, a rosé and a red aged in 500-litre terracotta amphorae. In fact, 'primo fuoco' is an expression used by potters to refer to the initial firing that transforms clay into terracotta. Whatever the label in question, those of Fattoria di Sammontana are genuine and ancestral interpretations.
