"Eruption 1614": it would be enough for Planeta to add Etna to clearly have a statement of a link to the territory of this Sicilian white. The strength of the volcano that year was such that the flows continued for 10 years: the longest eruption ever recorded. It is an area rich in history: we are in the hills surrounding the well-known village of Passopisciaro, on the slopes of Mount Etna, in an area of great charm and fertile soil covered by ash on the surface. The altitude offered by the mountain is particularly suitable for white grape varieties, including Riesling, which, in a smaller percentage, is present in this bottle.
Planeta "Eruzione 1614" is a blend with a majority percentage of Carricante and a smaller percentage of Riesling. It is a cru whose grapes all come from the vineyards of Sciara Nuova, on the north slope of Etna, 870 meters above sea level. The soil here is composed of ash and organic matter, rich in skeleton and minerals. The grapes are harvested in early October and placed in crates, then immediately refrigerated at 8°C. After manual selection, they are destemmed and undergo soft pressing, and the must is fermented at a constant temperature of 15° in steel tanks, where it decants with the fine lees for several months.
Planeta's Carricante "Eruzione 1614," in its Rhenish bottle, is a yellow-coloured white with some greenish highlights. It is a beautiful Etnean white wine, delicate and deep in aromas that bring out white flowers and fresh citrus notes, along with the sweet hint of wild apples, with a finish of refreshing mentholated tones. In the mouth, it is very dynamic and agile and impresses with its minerality, the result of the perfect synthesis of the terroir from which it comes. It is the perfect companion to seafood meals, even quite complex and fatty ones, and has ageing potential that may surprise you!
