Thanks to its ability to associate softness and freshness, Castello di Monsanto's Chardonnay 'Fabrizio Bianchi' stands out as an excellent Tuscan interpretation of this varietal of Burgundian origin. The bottle pays tribute to Fabrizio Bianchi, the historic proprietor who, in the mid-1970s, sensed the territory's vocation also towards Chardonnay, which was planted on estate lands located outside the Chianti Classico appellation. Initially, following the Burgundian model, the wine was vinified entirely in wood, but since the 2000s, seeking greater dynamism in the finished wine, only 30 percent of the mass ferments in wood, with the remainder processed in steel.
Castello di Monsanto 'Fabrizio Bianchi' Chardonnay is an expression of the white berry variety of the same name grown in guyot and spurred cordon systems on marl soils located about 260 meters above sea level. Once harvested, the grapes are vinified in white for 2/3 of the mass in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and for the remainder in French oak tonneau, a container in which the wine is left to mature on the fine lees for about 6-7 months. This is followed by one year of bottle ageing before release.
Castello di Monsanto 'Fabrizio Bianchi' Chardonnay has a bright and luminous straw yellow colour. The aromatic bouquet evokes inviting scents of mimosa, chamomile, broom and sage, enhanced by mineral nuances and hints of peach and citrus. Firm and smooth palate, intense and elegant, with an intriguing fresh-savoury component that supports the buttery finish. Although this Chardonnay is pleasant and persuasive even in its youth, it shows exceptional ageing qualities.
