Malvasia Skerk 2021

Malvasia Istriana by Skerk is a great pure and typical interpretation of the Carso area, aged for 12 months in oak barrels. The intriguing olfactory framework is painted by touches of resin, honey, apricot jam and caramel. On the palate it relaxes with balsamic elegance and freshness in a juicy, full and delicately mineral taste

MALVASIA SKERK 2021 DESCRIPTION

Sandy Skerk produces his Malvasia in the Trieste Karst, a stony, windswept land that gives wines with a distinct personality. The variety grown in the Karst is Malvasia Istriana, less aromatic than the better-known Malvasia di Candia. In this particular terroir, characterized by calcareous soils, hot and windy summers, but tempered by sea breezes, the vine has found an ideal habitat to express itself at its best. In the Karst it gives strongly territorial expressions, with a unique and original character. Skerk's work is oriented towards the utmost respect for the natural balance of the vine and the raw material, always skipping the characteristics of the grape and the territory.

Malvasia is born in the vineyards cultivated on the stony soils of the Karst plateau, characterized by little red soil and limestone rocks. The rows are buffeted by Bora, the cold northeast wind, which helps keep the grapes dry and healthy at all times, allowing agronomic management without the use of chemicals, according to the dictates of Organic and Biodynamic agriculture. The plants produce naturally with low yields, and after harvesting, the grapes are brought to the winery dug entirely into the limestone rock. Fermentation takes place in open wooden vats, using only indigenous yeasts, and a maceration on the skins of about ten days. After racking, Skerk's Malvasia matures on fine lees, again in wooden vats, for at least a year before bottling.

The end result is a Malvasia with rich and intense varietal aromas, a child of the Mediterranean warmth, brackish wind and white limestone. A perfect synthesis of terroir and skilled human labor, still conducted with artisanal care. The color is light yellow with golden reflections, typical of Orange Wines. The aromas are decisive and elegant, with fruity notes, hints of citrus, balsamic and officinal herbs of the Mediterranean scrub. The sip is satisfying in aromatic intensity, with pleasant freshness and iodized savoriness. It is best paired with fish menus or delicate white meats.
