SAGRANTINO 'CAMPO DI RAINA' RAINA 2020 DESCRIPTION

The Sagrantino "Campo di Raina" is a rich and multifaceted wine, the flagship red of the Umbrian winery. Francesco Mariani is a young winemaker with clear ideas, and after deciding in 2002 to take over Raìna—a winery named after the farmer who tended the vineyards for years—he embarked on a replanting project to focus on quality viticulture. To achieve this goal, he has eliminated chemical and synthetic products in the vineyard, while in the winery, spontaneous fermentation takes place without any clarification or filtration. Here, in this small vineyard park between Spoleto and Perugia, Francesco creates vibrant, lively wines that celebrate the local indigenous varieties. A wonderful, small reality!

The Sagrantino red "Campo di Raina" is made from pure grapes of the same name. The vineyards, cultivated according to biodynamic principles, are located at an altitude of about 250-300 meters, with a density of approximately 5700 vines per hectare. The extremely low yields and subsequent manual harvest are just part of Francesco's commitment to minimal intervention. Fermentation occurs spontaneously in steel containers with 15 days of maceration on the skins. The wine is aged in large oak barrels for 24 months and then for another 12 months in steel. It rests for an additional 12 months in the bottle before being released.

The Sagrantino "Campo di Raina" fills the glass with its intense, vibrant ruby hue. These last two adjectives perfectly describe the aromatic profile of the wine, which immediately reveals its richness and generosity. It unfolds with layers of plum and sour cherry jam, earthy notes, cinnamon, and a potpourri of dried flowers and balsamic herbs. This profile invites a sip, which unmistakably expresses the grape variety and its origin. With a powerful and compact character, the wine shows itself to be muscular and deep, highlighting not only its extract but also a tannin that punctuates the rhythm of the sip. A beautiful Umbrian testament that combines finesse and spontaneity.
