It can mature in the cellar and become an important meditation wine
Among the prized Barolo wines produced by the Batasiolo cellar, that of Cerequio undoubtedly stands out for its intense mentholated balsamic hints. The Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva di Cerequio is located in the commune of La Morra, right next to Brunate, another prestigious plot where the Batasiolo estate owns rows. Since Cerequio's vineyards are usually among the first in the Barolo area where the winter snow melts abruptly, the local farmers nicknamed this cru 'Riviera delle Langhe'. This is one of the most renowned and coveted sub-zones of the entire Barolo area, and it is no coincidence that Renato Ratti included it among the first-class crus in his famous Carta del Barolo.
Barolo Batasiolo Cerequio is a 100% Nebbiolo from vines cultivated in the Cerequio cru, where the soil is formed by the so-called 'marne di Sant'Agata fossils', consisting of layers of marl dating back to the Tortonian period, alternating with sandy veins. The vines then benefit from the altitude of approximately 350 metres above sea level and the south and south-east exposure. Following the harvest, which is generally carried out by hand during the first half of October, the grapes are transferred to the cellar where they are destemmed and mellowed in stainless steel tanks. Here alcoholic fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature with at least 10-12 days of maceration on the skins, a period associated with daily pumping over. The wine is then placed to age in large Slavonian oak casks and then again in steel. This is followed by bottling and further resting in glass before final release.
Barolo Cerequio di Batasiolo expresses an intense garnet red colour with light orange reflections. Deep sensations of ripe fruit and flowers introduce the olfactory texture, followed by balsamic puffs and complex suggestions of incense, tobacco and coffee. The enveloping softness and full body on the palate are balanced by the fresh-savoury component and elegant tannins, preluding the lingering finish.
