BAROLO 'GAVARINI CHINIERA' MAGNUM ELIO GRASSO 2017 DESCRIPTION

Elio Grasso's Barolo 'Gavarini Chiniera' is an elegant red wine of remarkable aromatic intensity, long-lived and complex, expressing at its best the characteristics of a great Nebbiolo, grown in one of the best areas of the denomination. In the lands of the Langhe, thanks to a mild and temperate climate and soils particularly suited to the vine, Nebbiolo expresses itself at the highest qualitative levels, with aromas of small berries, spicy notes and refined floral nuances.

Gavarini Chiniera' is a Barolo from one of the most interesting wineries in the Monforte d'Alba area. Elio Grasso's estate has some twenty hectares of vineyards, divided into several plots, which are vinified separately to enhance the qualities of each terroir. The wines are appreciated for their classic and elegant profile. The wine is made from Nebbiolo grapes from vineyards that are about 35 years old, cultivated in splendid hillside exposures facing south, at an altitude of 350-400 metres above sea level. The soils are composed of calcareous-clayey marls with the presence of sand. Manual harvesting takes place in the second half of October and the best bunches are sent to fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with maceration on the skins and daily pumping over. The wine matures in 25-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks and completes its ageing with about ten months in the bottle.

Elio Grasso's "Gavarini Chiniera" wine is a traditional Barolo, made according to the most ancient customs of the area, which highlights the extraordinary qualities of the vineyards of Monforte d'Alba, an area famous for its balance and expressive finesse. It is a great red wine for ageing, which reaches full maturity after several years of refinement in the cellar and has a longevity of some twenty years. It has a light garnet red colour and on the nose it expresses elegant aromas of dried rose petals, violets, delicately spicy hints, against a background of small red berries. It is remarkably structured, with a dense tannic texture and considerable aromatic complexity and richness. The finish is pleasantly fresh and very persistent.
