The Carignano del Sulcis "Arruga" is an intense and evolved Sardinian red wine, born from very old free-standing sapling vines and aged in French barriques for 12 months. Mediterranean scrub emerges on the nose, with nuances of forest fruits and woody spices. The sip is broad and full-bodied, long lasting
Carignano del Sulcis Superiore 'Arruga' is a red wine with a full, Mediterranean soul produced by the historic cooperative winery on the island of Sant'Antioco Sardus Pater. The appellation 'Arruga' comes from the Sardinian language and means "road," in reference to the white road one travels to get to the Carignano vineyard. This ancient native grape variety represents the varietal focus of the winery, which has been enhancing it in its many facets since its inception in 1955. In particular, 'Arruga' constitutes one of the spearheads of production.
Sardus Pater Carignano del Sulcis Superiore 'Arruga' is a 100 percent Carignano from vines bred as bush-trained free standing, that is, rooted on their own roots, without grafting. The vines have an average age of 80 years and rest on sandy soils. Once the berries have reached full ripeness, manual harvesting is carried out followed by vinification of the grapes in steel with 15 days of maceration on the skins. After racking, the mass is racked into Allier barriques where the complete malolactic fermentation takes place and the wine is aged for one year, followed by an additional 12 months of bottle aging.
In the glass, the Carignano del Sulcis Superiore Sardus Pater 'Arruga' exhibits a deep ruby-red guise with a garnet rim. Complex and intense hints of Mediterranean scrub, berries, juniper, licorice and dark spices characterize the olfactory texture. Ample, warm and full palate, with smooth tannins that are accompanied by a lingering finish played on balsamic and finely spiced sensations. This Carignano can be enjoyed young or left to evolve for several years in the cellar, best accompanied by succulent red meat main courses.
