Catarratto 'Contrada Zisola' Zisola - Mazzei 2022

The Catarratto 'Contrada Zisola' comes from the Zisola estate in Noto, where the Mazzei family presents elegant native Sicilian grape varieties. It is a white wine produced according to tradition but with an innovative vinification method: one half of the grapes is vinified traditionally, the other half is harvested late and macerated in cocciopesto. The result is a complex and long-lived white wine. The nose is dominated by intense hints of citrus fruits, as well as herbaceous and iodine hints reminiscent of the sea. On the palate it surprises for its structure, the maceration gives it a red structure, and for the elegant balance of the sip

CATARRATTO 'CONTRADA ZISOLA' ZISOLA - MAZZEI 2022 DESCRIPTION

The 'Contrada Zisola' Catarratto of the Zisola - Mazzei winery represents an interpretation of Catarratto in a macerated white version that stands out for its intense and textured taste, not without dynamism. This wine is the result of several concomitant factors, such as the calcareous soil that characterises the Zisola estate, the proximity to the sea, the constant ventilation, the low grape yield per plant and the processing in cocciopesto amphorae, all to deliver an original expression, at the same time endowed with an unmistakable Sicilian identity.

Catarratto Zisola - Mazzei 'Contrada Zisola' originates from pure Catarratto grapes grown on vines bred as trees in the area of Noto, in the province of Syracuse. Here the vines benefit from an altitude of 130 metres above sea level, excellent south-east exposure and medium-textured soils with a high limestone content. Harvesting is carried out by hand in September, and the grapes are then vinified half in the traditional way, with soft pressing and alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks, and the remaining half in earthenware amphorae, in contact with the skins for a good 3 months. The fermentation process takes place at a low temperature and after several months of maturation, the masses are finally assembled.

In the glass, the Catarratto 'Contrada Zisola' from the Zisola - Mazzei winery reveals a beautiful, luminous orange colour. The intense and broad aromatic range opens on scents of orange and grapefruit jam, joined later by hints of Mediterranean scrub and hints of iodine in the finish. The palate is enveloping and structured, pleasantly oily and textured, well supported by the marked freshness in a crisp and persistent finish, characterised by a lingering savoury trail.
