Veneto-based Cavalchina presents Custoza Superiore 'Amedeo', an agile and balanced white wine made from a characteristic blend of Garganega, Fernanda, Trebbianello and Trebbiano Toscano. The Fernanda grape is a clone of the grape variety of Piedmontese origin Cortese while the Trebbianello is a local clone of Tocai Friulano. As for the appellation of this label, it seems that the name is a tribute to Prince Amedeo di Savoia, who was wounded in 1866 during the Third War of Independence at Cavalchina, as attested by the slate memorial at the estate's entrance.
Cavalchina's Custoza Superiore 'Amedeo' originates from a blend of Garganega (40%), Fernanda (30%), Trebbianello (15%) and Trebbiano Toscano (15%). The vineyards are located between 120 and 140 metres above sea level and are planted on limestone and clay soils of morainic origin, particularly rich in gravel. At harvest time, only the best grapes are hand-picked and selected, respecting the ripening periods of each variety. The bunches of Fernanda undergo a pre-fermentation cryomaceration and the Garganega is vinified in a reducing environment, while the processing of Trebbianello and Trebbiano Toscano is more traditional. After pressing and a brief static decantation, the musts undergo alcoholic fermentation at a controlled temperature in steel vats, without malolactic fermentation, where the maturing phase of a few months preceding blending and final bottling also takes place.
The colour of Cavalchina 'Amedeo' Custoza Superiore is golden yellow with greenish hues. The nose offers fruity and floral notes that combine with clear mineral and citrus perceptions. Dry, balanced and fine on the palate, with a vibrant fresh-savoury component.
