Dogliani 'Papà Celso', from the Marziano Abbona wine cellar, is a splendid version of Dolcetto, one of Piedmont's most famous and best-loved indigenous grape varieties, loved by enthusiasts in search of a fruity, fragrant red. A wine, less structured and important than the Nebbiolo of the Langhe, but with a more immediate, harmonious character and easy to drink even when young. In the historic area of Dogliani it reaches the highest expressive quality, giving labels that are among the elite of the best Piedmontese wines, thanks to its ripe fruit and harmonious aromatic richness. This is the cellar's most important Dolcetto, absolutely to be tried.
The Dolcetto "Papà Celso" is a Dogliani that Marziano Abbona wanted to dedicate to his father, as a sign of gratitude and to seal a continuity between generations in the production of great Piedmontese wines with a straightforward and traditional face. The estate saw the light at the beginning of the 20th century and still plays a leading role today, enhancing the area's historical grape varieties, in particular: Dolcetto, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Favorita, Arneis and Moscato. The Doriolo vineyard, planted by Celso Abbona, is about 60 years old and guarantees excellent quality production. After the harvest, the grapes are destemmed and fermented spontaneously using only indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled steel tanks, with classic maceration on the skins. Before bottling, the wine matures for a few months in steel to keep its typical varietal character intact.
Marziano Abbona's "Papa Celso" is a Dogliani of great stuff, expressing the best characteristics of Dolcetto, thanks to the grapes from the old vineyards. A red wine that highlights the vocation of the Dogliani terroir and a centuries-old savoir-faire, which translate into a dark red wine, characterised by fruity aromas of ripe cherries, red plums, hints of small dark berries, sensations of humus and undergrowth. The tannic texture is dense, but well integrated with a juicy, rich fruit that stretches harmoniously towards a finish of balanced freshness. Ideal to be enjoyed with roast white meats or noble poultry on the spit.
