Edinburgh Elixir from the historic Florentine perfume-pharmaceutical shop Santa Maria Novella is a digestive liqueur made from medicinal herbs, pleasantly smooth and bittering. Among the shop's oldest spirits, the original recipe is said to have belonged to a Dominican monk from Edinburgh who was visiting Florence in the 17th century. Perfect after-dinner bitter to drink neat or with an ice cube
The Elisir di Edimburgo of the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella is one of the historical preparations of this very old Florentine company, which for over 800 years has dedicated itself to the patient processing of herbs to make essences and liqueurs. Thanks to a careful respect for the customs handed down from generation to generation, even today the wide range of products is prepared following tradition and using artisanal methods, care and passion. Only in this way has it been possible to perpetuate over the centuries the culture and knowledge of the characteristics and qualities of herbs, flowers, roots and barks, which form the basis of each product.
The Edinburgh Elixir is the fruit of the ancient savoir-faire of the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, a precious Florentine institution, which originated at the beginning of the 13th century inside a convent of Dominican friars, as the pharmacy of the religious community. Its origins date back to the concession to a group of friars of Santa Maria Inter Vineas, a small church outside the city walls. Here, the monks began cultivating medicinal herbs and preparing elixirs and ointments. The history of the Officina then spanned the entire history of Florence, preserving its prestige unchanged. Even today, it is recognised as a true heritage of the city and represents an important piece of its history. It is said that the recipe for this elixir came from a Dominican monk from Edinburgh, who stayed at the convent in Florence in the 17th century. Nothing has been changed since then, in order to maintain the typical taste of the past.
The Elisir di Edimburgo liqueur produced by the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella is an excellent digestive liqueur, made with a skilful selection of botanicals, fruit of the ancient herbalist culture of the Dominican monks. To the eye, it has a luminous amber colour with brilliant antique gold reflections. The bouquet is intense and elegant, with aromas of medicinal herbs, balsamic and herbal hints, floral and delicately spiced nuances. The entry on the palate is soft and harmonious, with a pleasantly long and persistent sip. The finish is fresh and slightly bitter. Excellent to be enjoyed neat or on the rocks.
