Gamay 'Mademoiselle M' Clos de Mez 2021

Gamay "Mademoiselle M" from French winery Clos de Mez is the most brazen of labels, having left restraint and righteousness behind to give itself over to fun. It is made from pure grapes of the same name vinified with only indigenous yeasts and in carbonic maceration, aged for 9 months in steel. The bright ruby red color introduces aromas of grapes and red fruits that accompany a forthright, funky and drinkable sip

GAMAY 'MADEMOISELLE M' CLOS DE MEZ 2021 DESCRIPTION

"Mademoiselle M" is the Beaujolais label that encapsulates countless meanings linked to the Clos de Mez domaine, graphically represented by the cartoonish design, like a casual tattoo to be worn on the skin. M is the initial of the company name and of Maguelone, the founder's daughter, and a reference to Our Lady of Fleurie, who dominates the village vineyards from the top of the hill on which the chapel dedicated to her stands.
Clos de Mez makes 'Mademoiselle M' by vinifying in purity Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc grapes from the vineyard adjacent to the winery's premises and populated with vines that are now over 50 years old. These are vines trained using the ancient tree pruning system, low and gnarled, sinking their roots into soils of pink granite decomposed into superficial sand: the extreme quality of the fruit is paid for with incredibly limited yields, generally contained within 25 or 30 hectolitres per hectare. The altitudes of the Fleurie vineyard are between 300 metres at the level of the village square and 425 at the sanctuary, with significant average slopes, which in some cases reach dizzying heights. In this landscape, the vineyard is managed by hand, without any systemic interventions based on synthetic chemicals, and the work in the cellar consistently follows this philosophy: manipulations are practically non-existent, vinification is carried out in a detached manner. After the harvest, the whole bunches are placed in steel vats where a semi-carbonic maceration is completed, followed by maturation in tanks over a period of 9 months. Bottling is carried out without clarification or filtration, except for coarse filtration.
Bright ruby colour and luminous appearance introduce 'Mademoiselle M' from Clos de Mez. The impact of the aromas turns to a striking fruitiness of small red and dark berries, from currant to cassis, passing through blackberry, in an incredible range of sweet and sour, fragrant and ripe nuances. A Gamay that benefits from long oxygenation, then stretching out juicy and structured on the palate, very fresh and with a well-pronounced tannic verve.
