Lagrein Riserva 'Karl' Bergmannhof 2022

Bergmannhof's Lagrein Riserva 'Kar' is an intense, ripe expression of one of South Tyrol's principle grape varieties. The fermentation, which is spontaneous, takes place in vats left open and then the wine matures for a long time in wood. Prior to bottling, the wine does not undergo any clarification or filtration. This allows the development of body and complexity. The nose has juicy hints of red and dark fruit, with hints of spice and tobacco on the finish. The palate is intense, warm, with chiselled tannins but soft on the sip. Perfect with important main courses such as venison loin

LAGREIN RISERVA 'KARL' BERGMANNHOF 2022 DESCRIPTION

The South Tyrolean Lagrein Riserva 'Karl' is one of the most important red wines of the Bergmannhof winery, standing out for its complexity and structure. Lagrein is considered the noblest native black grape variety in the whole of South Tyrol and has been appreciated since ancient times for the high quality of the wines made from it. It is no coincidence that for centuries, wine made from Lagrein was reserved exclusively for the clergy and nobility. Regarding its origins, the first evidence of a 'Lagrinum bonum' grape dates back to the 14th century, testifying to the long history of the vine.

The 'Karl' Lagrein Bergmannhof Alto Adige Riserva is made exclusively from Lagrein grapes grown sustainably in the area of San Paolo, a hamlet in the municipality of Appiano. In particular, the vines are 15 years old and are planted on gravelly, clay and limestone soils with very stony sections. At the beginning of October, the grapes are harvested by hand. They are then transferred to the cellar and mellowed in open wooden vats, containers in which spontaneous alcoholic fermentation takes place in contact with the skins. Once the fermentation process is complete, the wine is racked into oak tonneaux and barriques for the 18-month ageing phase on the fine lees that precedes bottling and a further 6 months in glass. Invasive clarification or filtration operations are then excluded throughout the entire process.

The Lagrein Sudtirol 'Karl' Riserva from Bergmannhof is an intense ruby red colour. On the nose, pleasant hints of cherry and dried violets alternate with complex hints of nutmeg, clove and earthiness, with tobacco and cocoa nuances in the background. The taste is full-bodied and robust, with a warm and very soft development that rests on a finely tannic finish, characterised by a fine mineral profile.
