The Bolgheri Rosso "Magari" from Angelo Gaja's Tuscan winery Ca' Marcanda is a classic Bordeaux blend that well interprets the terroir of this vocated corner of wine Tuscany. The blend is based on a predominance of Merlot, which gives an elegant and ripe fruit, combined with the structure and finesse of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. It is a wine that succeeds admirably in synthesizing the great tradition of Bordeaux reds with the sunny, typically Mediterranean characteristics of the Tuscan coastal area. The long ageing in barriques gives a complex, intense wine characterized by the presence of elegant evolutionary notes.
"Magari" is a Bolgheri Rosso that stems from Angelo Gaja's desire to embark on a new adventure in the land of Tuscany after the great international successes achieved with the wines of the Langhe. Once the Bolgheri estate was identified, the purchase required such lengthy negotiations that it was given the name Ca' Marcanda, precisely in memory of constant haggling. It is an estate near the Via Bolgherese, in one of the most vocated areas ever, extending over a hundred hectares, cultivated with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah, all international varieties particularly suited to the area's microclimate, characterized by extraordinary luminosity and the presence of the mild breezes of the Tyrrhenian Sea. In just a few years, Angelo Gaja's Tuscan wines have come to the attention of connoisseurs as some of the absolute best interpretations of the Tuscan coast's terroir in the name of elegance and expressive refinement.
Ca' Marcanda's "Magari" Bolgheri Rosso is an interpretation that emphasizes, above all, harmony, balance and ripe softness of the fruit. It is a wine that fits fully into Angelo Gaja's vision, which is marked by the pursuit of excellence without compromise. Fermentations take place separately, following the different ripening times of the grapes. Before bottling, the wine matures for 18 months in French oak barriques. In the glass, it has a deep ruby colour. The bouquet recalls aromas of small dark berry fruits, cherry, ripe plum, nuances of wild herbs from the Mediterranean maquis and hints of graphite. The palate has a good structure, with an evolved and silky tannic texture. The centre of the mouth is elegant and persistent, with good aromatic complexity. The finish is harmonious, balanced and very persistent. A great red, pure expression of the union between terroir and Gaja style.
