Merlot Riserva 'Vigna Kastelaz' Elena Walch 2019

Elena Walch's Merlot Riserva 'Vigna Kastelaz' is an elegant expression of Merlot, one of the winery's flagship wines. With a smooth, velvety mouthfeel, supported by well-integrated tannins and a juicy character that returns to the nose thanks to intense notes of ripe red fruit, this wine lends itself to being drunk immediately as an accompaniment to important red meat and game dishes, or to leave it in the cellar several years so that it can best express its great finesse

MERLOT RISERVA 'VIGNA KASTELAZ' ELENA WALCH 2019 DESCRIPTION

The Merlot Riserva 'Vigna Kastelaz' of Elena Walch is the result of the conscious work of Elena and her daughters Julia and Karoline, who have been able to interpret the characteristics of the South Tyrolean terroir in the best possible way and to valorise the indigenous grape varieties. The working philosophy has always been geared towards environmental sustainability: the wines must be the utmost expression of their land of origin and their quality comes from respectful work in the vineyard and cellar of the raw material and its growth and development phases. Today, the winery is recognised as one of the best centres for wine production in South Tyrol on a national and international level.

The grapes for Elena Walch's Merlot Riserva 'Vigna Kastelaz' grow in the Vigna Kastelaz near Tramin. The exposure is completely to the south, perfect for the sun's rays to constantly reach the grapes, guaranteeing a full range of aromas at harvest time; the altitude is approximately 360 metres above sea level and the soil consists of limestone, moraine stone and reddish sediments from the so-called Werfen layers. Summers are hot and mild and winters cold and snowy with sudden frosts. The grapes are harvested by hand; alcoholic fermentation takes place in steel with subsequent maceration on the marc for 10 days and malolactic fermentation in wood. It matures 18 months in barriques.

The Merlot Riserva 'Vigna Kastelaz' of Elena Walch presents itself in the glass as ruby red with brilliant reflections. On the nose there are hints of wild berries such as raspberry, redcurrant and wild violet petals in combination with spicy notes of white pepper; on the palate the taste is fresh, balanced and enveloping with a fresh, mineral finish that balances the structure and entices the drinker. In pairing it is perfect with stewed or grilled red meat cuts and local game; also interesting with typical smoked meats. Ideal to accompany the family holiday table and enjoy a traditional product that reflects the local wine history.
