Fattoria Le Pupille's Morellino di Scansano is an excellent wine in terms of its value for money, in which Sangiovese is blended with a small amount of Alicante and Malvasia Nera. Harvested for the first time by Elisabetta in 1985, this red has managed perhaps more than any other to represent and express the local terroir. We can say that Elisabetta has changed the history of Maremma, which was once little recognised by the wine world, but which over the years has managed to carve out a fine position for itself thanks to Morellino, the territory's main product. Thus Elisabetta became the "Lady of Morellino" and the Queen of Maremma, she rediscovered and gave prestige to this variety, raising it to being one of the most representative varieties of the territory. This expression has been able to make the most of the great viticultural potential of Maremma and immerse itself in an uncontaminated territory of wild beauty. Elisabetta has played a fundamental role in spreading the values, aromas and intensity of this Tuscan red wine throughout the world.
Morellino Fattoria le Pupille is born between Pereta and Magliano in Tuscany, on vineyards that can be more than 40 years old, facing south-west, kissed by the sun and caressed by the wind. The grapes ripens to perfection thanks to the precious temperature fluctuations between day and night. The soil is rich in skeleton with a good clay-ferrous component. The grapes are harvested at the end of September for the Sangiovese and at the beginning of October for the other two varieties and taken to the winemaking facilities. This is followed by fermentation in steel with maceration on the skins for at least 15 days. Maturation takes place mainly in steel for about 8 months and a small part of the mass is refined in second-passage barriques. A short bottle ageing completes the process, making it ready for marketing.
The Morellino di Scansano red wine descends into the glass with a distinctive purplish-red colour with ruby shades. The olfactory bouquet envelops the nose with hints of violets, small wild red fruits, sweet spices and balsamic aromas. On the palate, it broadens with depth and balance, displaying a decisive fresh component and revealing smooth, round tannins. Elisabetta has given life to a dream thanks to her tenacity and enthusiasm, which has become reality and lives on, day after day, in her Morellino.
