The Pinot Bianco "Vial" from Cantina di Caldaro is a white wine with an austere and extremely mineral character. It embodies to perfection the soul of the South Tyrolean terroir, which sees in its austerity and its marvellous Dolomites the main features that mark a landscape of pure charm. Elegance and finesse take centre stage in the sip of this Pinot Blanc, which combines the subtle traits typical of the grape variety with the mineral character that comes from the local hills and Lake Caldaro. The Caldaro Winery is, in fact, located in that area, thus benefiting from the consequent beneficial influences that the lake water can bestow.
"Vial" is a pure Pinot Blanc from hillside vineyards with eastern exposure and is located at an altitude of about 500-550 meters above sea level. The vines, which are between 10 and 13 years old, dwell on porphyritic-clayey limestone soils, subject to strong temperature fluctuations between day and night that allow obtaining fine grapes well endowed with aromatic complement. Following the harvest and the grapes' soft pressing, the must undergoes a period of slow cold settling that precedes alcoholic fermentation. Maturation, in the presence of fine lees, takes place mostly inside steel containers, while the remaining 10% ages in large barrels; after 5 months have passed, the wine is filtered and bottled.
Cantina di Caldaro "Vial" drops into the glass with a bright straw yellow colour. The bouquet is predominantly composed of fresh fruit notes, such as apple and pear, with hints of dried fruit and a strongly mineral background. There is much correspondence in the mouth with what was perceived on the nose: the fresh and savoury vein enlivens the fruit and makes it crisp. A long mineral persistence makes it extremely drinkable and fine.
