Weingut Gottardi's Pinot Noir Magnum was born in South Tyrol, specifically in Neumarkt-Mazzon near Bolzano. Bruno Gottardi plied his trade as a food and wine merchant in Innsbruck, passing on the business to his son Alexander. In 1986 they decided together to buy 6 hectares of land in Mazzon to start their own wine production. Before putting the bottles on the market, they carried out replanting work in some vineyards to guarantee excellent quality of the final product. In 1995, the first bottle came out on the market. In the years that followed, Alexander decided to expand the land they owned, eventually managing 9 hectares in total, which since 2010 have been entirely planted with Pinot Noir, with the goal of devoting themselves exclusively to making wines that can be the result of an excellent expression of Pinot Noir from Alto Adige.
The Pinot Noir Magnum vineyards of Weingut Gottardi grow on soils characterized by the presence of sandstone, reddish and yellow siltstone, limestone, marlstone and dolomite. The climate is characterized by harsh, snowy winters often affected by frost, while in summer, there is long evening sunshine and cool winds from the Dolomites that allow Pinot Noir to develop enviable elegance and refinement. The grapes are harvested manually, and alcoholic fermentation occurs in steel in the cellar. It is aged for one year in 1/4 new barriques followed by 8 months in large wooden barrels.
The colour of Gottardi's Pinot Noir Magnum is a deep ruby red with bright highlights. The bouquet of aromas is reminiscent of red and black berries such as strawberry, blackberry and blueberry and black cherry and hints of delicate spices and pine wood. On the palate, it proves to be sweet, enveloping and warm with good tannin present and well integrated into the overall structure with final persistence that beckons the drinker. In pairing, it is recommended with grilled and stewed red meat dishes, local game and first courses with seasonal vegetables; also interesting with aged cow's milk cheeses. An excellent product to keep in one's personal cellar and to reserve for special occasions of family celebrations, to enjoy in the glass one of the best interpretations of Pinot Noir in the Italian territory.
