Primitivo Bio '12 e Mezzo' Varvaglione 2022

Varvaglione's Primitivo Bio '12 e Mezzo' is produced by a historic Salento winery, a light version of one of the most traditional reds of the south. The nose has hints of ripe red fruits, sweet spices such as cinnamon and a slight undertone of vanilla and cocoa. The sip is soft, enveloping and persistent, with well-integrated tannins that provide good structure. A wine with a drinkable soul, it is perfect with intense pasta dishes

PRIMITIVO BIO '12 E MEZZO' VARVAGLIONE 2022 DESCRIPTION

The Primitivo Bio '12 e Mezzo' from the Apulian winery Varvaglione represents aninterpretation of Primitivo made with respect for the environment, as evidenced by the organic certification. This label is part of the '12 e Mezzo' collection, composed of wines characterised by a low alcohol content, precisely around 12.5% by volume. In particular, this Primitivo is part of the '12 e Mezzo' Bio line, being produced from organically grown grapes.

Varvaglione '12 e Mezzo' Primitivo Bio is made exclusively from Primitivo grapes grown in the province of Taranto according to certified organic farming principles. Following the harvest, the grapes are transferred to the winery to be mellowed in stainless steel tanks, containers where alcoholic fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 24-26°C with maceration on the skins. After the malolactic fermentation has also been completed, the wine is racked into French oak barrels for maturation for about 6 months, which lends further complexity to this Primitivo, which after a further brief rest in the bottle is finally ready for release.

To the eye, the Primitivo '12 e Mezzo' Bio of the family-run Varvaglione shows an intense ruby red colour with violet hues. On the nose, vivid fruity scents of currant and blackberry emerge, accompanied by notes of sweet spices such as nutmeg and vanilla and hints of liquorice and chocolate. The taste is surprisingly light thanks to the measured alcohol content, supported by good freshness, with hints of ripe fruit and coconut accompanying the finish. The producer's recommendation is to pair Primitivo Bio '12 e Mezzo' with fresh cheeses, earthy first courses or white meat dishes.
