Sigurd's 'Red Blend' is a vibrant expression of red wine from the Barossa, a skilful blend that undergoes a short carbonic maceration to accentuate the lightness and juiciness of the fruit. The nose reveals a broad spectrum of berries, dark hints of plum and undergrowth, opening the scene to hints of exotic spices. The palate is very fresh, with crisp fruit supported by soft tannins and intense savouriness. Despite its gracefulness on the sip, it is certainly capable of surprising even after several years in the cellar
The 'Red Blend' from the Australian winery Sigurd is a label that emphasises theexpression of different varieties grown in the Barossa Valley. The grape varieties in the blend are Syrah, the main variety of the Barossa, Grenache, another grape widely grown in the region, Carignan, a variety from the Mediterranean basin that has adapted well to the soil and climatic characteristics of the area, Mourvèdre, a variety often blended with Syrah and Grenache, Lagrein, an indigenous grape from Alto Adige that is sporadically present in Australia, and Cinsault, widely used in the Rhone in blends with other varieties.
Sigurd's 'Red Blend' thus derives from the original combination of Syrah (40%), Grenache (22%), Carignan (16%), Mourvèdre (10%), Lagrein (9%) and Cinsault (3%), varieties from different Australian wine-growing areas, with some Grenache vines over 80 years old. Each grape variety is vinified separately with approximately 20% whole clusters undergoing carbonic maceration. Alcoholic fermentation, which lasts between 10 and 30 days, takes place in wooden vats and open stainless steel tanks with only indigenous yeasts. The subsequent ageing phase takes place in French oak barrels of various capacities, containers in which the wine stays for 14 months. This is followed by blending and a further short rest in steel before final bottling.
The Sigurd 'Red Blend' presents itself in the glass with an intense ruby red colour. On the nose, crisp hints of red fruits such as cherry and raspberry emerge, combined with dark hints of black pepper, blackberry and liquorice. Soft and refreshing on the palate, characterised by a vibrant and juicy development that rests on a graceful finish.
