Reve Indigene from the French winery Chemins de Bassac is a juicy red wine with excellent persistence perfect for drinking as an alternative label during meat-based meals. It is made with a blend of Grenache and Mourvedre and the sole use of indigenous yeasts during vinification, the ageing process takes place for 16 months in Bordeaux wood. The intense ruby red colour dresses the glass in a velvety mantle while aromas of ripe fruit and spices accompany a bold and characterful sip
"Reve Indigène" is the fulfilled dream of Bruno Triguero and Thama Sakuma, architects fleeing from the chaotic São Paulo, Brazil, who found refuge in this corner of the Languedoc, where they founded the Chemins de Bassac winery, named after the historic lieu-dit where they are located. This 'indigenous dream' recounts the beauty of the landscape, sandwiched between the Mediterranean Sea and the foothills of the Massif Central, and the vocation of indigenous vines to yield great wines, if bred with skilful care. An original territorial interpretation, at once profound and graceful.
Chemins de Bassac creates its "Reve Indigène" from two black berried varieties that are extremely representative of the Occitan region. Both probably have Hispanic origins and have been able to wander throughout the Mediterranean, even putting down firm roots in the New World: Grenache and Mourvedre. The two plots are adjoining, conducted under a biodynamic regime and characterised by a predominant presence of limestone. Manual harvesting and an initial sorting in the vineyard bring ripe, healthy grapes to the cellar. The two varieties are vinified whole cluster and separately, with an initial carbonic maceration. Subsequently, direct pressing in wooden vats triggers spontaneous fermentation that lasts for about 20 days. The two productions are then blended in the proportion of 70% Grenache and 30% Mourvedre, placed to age for a period of 16 months in 600-litre 'demi-muids'.
The colour of "Reve Indigène" is indicative of the grapes used in its vinification: the thicker red of the Mourvedre is lightened by the brighter, more transparent tones of the Grenache. The nose has a beautiful impact on fruity notes, from small crunchy red berries to sweeter black cherries and plums. Intriguing and perfectly representative of the terroir is the aromatic whiff of dried herbs, which speak of the Mediterranean maquis and inland cuisine. To the palate it reveals a muscular body, warmth and tannin presence, balanced by a lively freshness and a saline note that emerges in the finish, making the sip particularly persistent. A red that spontaneously calls for different pairing ideas: grilled beef fillet, Hungarian goulash, lasagne.
