Riesling from the South Tyrolean winery Falkenstein has for years been regarded as one of the best Italian labels, made from the grapes of this extraordinary white grape variety that originates in central Europe and in the Mosel region yields some of the best wines in the world. The cool climate and suitable soils of the Vinschgau immediately proved perfect for excellent results, so much so that it has become a true second home for the grape variety. Its fresh, elegant profile and intense aromatic richness make it one of the most interesting whites in the region.
The white Riesling is one of the most famous wines made by Franz Pratzner, who created the Falkenstein winery in the late 1990s near Naturno in the heart of the Vinschgau. The Riesling vineyards are cultivated at an altitude between 700 and 900 metres above sea level with sunny south-facing exposure, on very steep slopes, with terracing supported by dry stone walls. The climate is cool and characterised by considerable temperature ranges. The morainic soils are rich in sand and crushed stone, particularly granite, slate, gneiss, quartz and mica. These are poor, very well-drained soils, perfect for the requirements of Riesling. After soft pressing, the wine ferments and matures in large acacia wood barrels and completes its maturation with a year in the bottle before being released for sale.
The Falkenstein Riesling wine is the child of a great terroir and one of South Tyrol's most talented and rigorous winegrowers. To the eye, it has a luminous light yellow colour with brilliant reflections. The bouquet is intense and elegant, with floral aromas, citrus fragrances, aromas of white-fleshed peach, green apple, hints of Vinschgau apricot, delicate honeyed nuances and stony, mineral sensations. Limpid and with remarkable expressive tension, it offers a rich sip, with deep, persistent aromas traversed by a vibrant freshness, which accompanies a long, savoury finish. Try it with fish dishes, seafood first courses, delicate white meats or fresh cheeses.
