The Rosso Roma Riserva from the Poggio Le Volpi winery is a label endowed with rich fruity and spicy aromas, born from the combination of Montepulciano and the international Cabernet Franc and Merlot grape varieties. Located in the municipality of Monte Porzio Catone, on the outskirts of the city of Rome, Poggio Le Volpi was one of the major promoters of the Rome Denominazione di Origine Controllata, established in 2011 with the aim of emphasising the Roman territory's multi-millennial wine-making tradition. Demonstrating the vocation of the area, the vines allowed by the regulations are numerous and include both traditional varieties and international, white and red grapes.
Poggio Le Volpi Rosso Riserva Roma derives from a blend of Montepulciano, Cabernet Franc and Merlot grapes grown in various municipalities within the Rome DOC area. In particular, the vines rest on hilly soils of volcanic, pozzolanic and sandy origin, where they benefit from the sea winds blowing in from the Tyrrhenian Sea. After harvesting, the grapes are transferred to the cellar for alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks with maceration on the skins. Instead, for the subsequent ageing phase, wooden barriques of various origins are used, containers in which the wine stays for about a year until final bottling.
In the glass, Poggio Le Volpi's Roma Rosso Riserva shows an intense and consistent ruby red colour. The rich and complex bouquet is described by hints of cherries in spirit, aromatic herbs, cinchona, cardamom, black pepper and sweet spices, surrounded by balsamic puffs. On the palate, it is soft, full-bodied and of great intensity, with silky, well-amalgamated tannins that are accompanied by sensations of ripe fruit and spices in a long persistent finish.
