Mompertone' is a blend of Barbera and Syrah that speaks Piedmontese dialect. The vineyards that give birth to this red wine are in fact located in Calliano, in the lower Monferrato area. The producing winery is Prunotto, owned by the Antinori family. After having made the Tuscan Bordeaux blends famous, the Antinori family also wanted to measure themselves against the Piedmontese terroir, both in the Langa and in the Monferrato. To date, the winery's vineyards extend in both areas, covering a total surface area of 50 hectares. 11 of these are destined for the production of Mompertone, a wine that interweaves the more straightforward and territorial tradition of Barbera with the decisive and refined personality of Syrah.
Monferrato Rosso Mompertone comes from vineyards located 300 metres above sea level, planted on clay soils with numerous sandy veins. When the winery deems that the optimal time to harvest the grapes has come, the harvest begins. The grapes are brought to the cellar, destemmed and crushed. The must obtained first undergoes alcoholic fermentation and then malolactic fermentation. At the end of these phases, the wine matures for a period of 10-12 months in both barriques and large casks, and ends its maturation in the bottle, waiting for a further 6 months or so.
Mompertone Prunotto is a red wine with a deep, intense ruby colour, with some violet reflections. Its bouquet is characterised by adistinctly fruity imprint, recognisable in hints of plum and cherry. Accompanying these sweet notes emerge hints of violets, coffee and that spicy trace typical of Syrah. In the mouth, it is full-bodied and rich, enveloping and endowed with velvety soft tannins. It closes with a persistence that resembles a caress, making it perfect for a convivial dinner, as well as for a well-deserved moment of relaxation to be enjoyed alone.
