Red 'Philip' Castello di Fonterutoli - Mazzei 2020

The Red 'Philip' Castello di Fonterutoli is a Supertuscan from Mazzei that pays homage to its ancestor Filippo, an important figure in the history of viticulture. This pure Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the union of grapes from two different plots, one on alberese soils at Fonterutoli and one on sandstone at Belguardo, in the Maremma. This is a wine with character: the nose is dominated by intense hints of red fruit, then hints of black pepper and pleasant, barely perceptible hints of green pepper. The palate reveals a mature and intriguing wine, supported by an important structure that ends in a long, complex and surprisingly fresh finish

RED 'PHILIP' CASTELLO DI FONTERUTOLI - MAZZEI 2020 DESCRIPTION

The renowned Tuscan wine estate Castello di Fonterutoli - Mazzei presents Rosso 'Philip', a pure Cabernet Sauvignon with a complex and spicy style. This label is a tribute to Philip Mazzei, an ancestor of the Mazzei family who lived at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. He was a liberal thinker, American patriot and pioneer of viticulture in the state of Virginia, along with his friend and third president of the United States of America, Thomas Jefferson. In fact, in 1773 Philip Mazzei planted the first vineyards in the territory, thus contributing to the development of viticulture in the United States.

The Rosso Castello di Fonterutoli - Mazzei 'Philip' is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from vineyards in the Chianti Classico area, characterised by an average age of 15-25 years. Altitude ranges from 50 to 310 metres above sea level, exposure is south and south-west, while the soil composition is predominantly alberese or sandstone, depending on the area. Manual harvesting is followed by red vinification through alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with about two weeks of maceration on the skins. Once the fermentation process is complete, the wine is racked into 225-litre French and American oak casks, 30% new, for the 18-month ageing that precedes the final bottling.

The Rosso 'Philip' of the Castello di Fonterutoli - Mazzei estate is dark ruby red in colour. The olfactory range is described by intense hints of red fruits such as raspberry and cherry, enriched by spicy hints of black pepper and hints of green pepper. The taste is intense, round and evolved, with a fine tannic texture defining the rather long and complex finish.
