SIEPI CASTELLO DI FONTERUTOLI - MAZZEI 2021 DESCRIPTION

Castello di Fonterutoli - Mazzei's "Siepi" is a Tuscan wine produced near Castellina in Chianti, the heart of the Chianti Classico DOCG. The Mazzei Marquises have held ownership of this castle since 1435, which has preserved over time the historicity and authenticity of the buildings and the land, preserving an atmosphere typical of medieval times. Over time, the Mazzei family decided to study and enhance the territory, trying to give life to good quality products from a predominantly stony and rocky soil: the result has been the production of wines of unique complexity and diversity, becoming the signature of the estate. Today the activity also includes the production of Extra Virgin Olive Oil and lavender; the latter is used for the production of natural cosmetics.

The Sangiovese and Merlot grapes of Castello di Fonterutoli - Mazzei's "Siepi" are grown in vineyards covering a fully planted area of about 650 hectares, vineyards divided into seven sub-zones with different altitudes. The Siepi locality is located about 260 meters above sea level with a southern/southeastern exposure, a position that guarantees sunlight for much of the year for fully ripe clusters at harvest time. The age of the vines is between 22 and 35 years. Harvesting is done manually at two different times: for Merlot, it is in early September, while for Sangiovese, it is done at the end. In the cellar, the must is vinified in steel, where it also stays for about 3 months. It is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels.

To the eye, Castello di Fonterutoli - Mazzei's "Siepi" is bright purple-red with intense reflections; the nose releases hints of elderberry, ripe plum, wild berries and spicy notes of sandalwood and pipe tobacco. The palate is structured, pleasantly tannic, elegant and enveloping for curious and continuous drinking. In pairing, it is ideal with rich, structured dishes such as traditional Tuscan red meat cuts cooked on the grill and local game; also excellent with blue-veined and very mature cheeses of both cow's milk and sheep's milk. Excellent for honouring important family celebrations and anniversaries, sipping a product that is the result of experienced work and attention to detail.
