The Solare di Capannelle is an intriguing Supertuscan that combines Sangiovese, the prince of Chianti, with a percentage of Malvasia Nera, which lends a great deal of aromaticity and helps to delineate a unique profile. It opens on the nose with intense hints of red fruit such as raspberry and morello cherry and, on the finish, evolved notes of tobacco and cocoa. The palate is ample, with elegant tannins that enhance a distinctly savoury profile typical of the terroir. Try it with refined foods, such as game meat or mature cheeses
The Capannelle Chianti winery introduces 'Solare', the estate's historic label with a broad and elegant style. The 'Solare', produced for the first time with the 1990 vintage through collaboration with Giorgio Pinchiorri, owner of the renowned Enoteca Pinchiorri in Florence, falls into the category of the so-called 'Supertuscan'. This term, coined in the early 1980s, refers to the great Tuscan wines produced outside the specifications of the region's historic appellations such as Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino. Initially, the term indicated reds produced with international grapes, often in blends with Sangiovese, but it was later extended to those wines produced with Sangiovese and other traditional grapes that, for freedom of production, preferred to renounce the better known appellations, as in the case of 'Solare'.
Capannelle 'Solare' originates from a blend of Sangiovese (80%) and Malvasia Nera (20%), varieties cultivated according to practices inspired by organic farming principles. Once harvested, the grapes are transferred to the winery for red vinification with alcoholic fermentation in contact with the skins in truncated conical Slavonian oak vats, ranging in size from 13 to 30 hectolitres. This is followed by ageing for about 18 months in French oak barriques and then a further resting period of at least 2 years in the bottle before final release.
Capannelle's 'Solare' is characterised by its beautiful intense ruby colour with purple reflections. The aromatic range opens on clear fruity sensations of raspberry and morello cherry, soon joined by more complex scents of cocoa and tobacco. On the palate it is broad and savoury, with sweet and elegant tannins that are accompanied by a pleasant freshness anticipating the characteristic mineral epilogue.
