Syrah 'Gargantua Washington' Bergstrom 2015

Bergstrom's "Gargantua Washington" Syrah is a successful experiment for this Oregon winery. Syrah is among the most successful international grape varieties, capable of producing great wines in many parts of the world. So Bergstrom offers several versions of Syrah from various West Coast states, a selection of terroirs. This Washington version plays on hints of fruit and sweet spices, with slight and charming hints of mint that, along with typical black pepper, give it an exotic feel. Surprising in savouriness and structure, the sip is fresh and the tannin, present, is subtle and well integrated. A red of great elegance.

SYRAH 'GARGANTUA WASHINGTON' BERGSTROM 2015 DESCRIPTION

The Syrah 'Gargantua Washington' from the renowned US winery Bergstrom represents abroad and elegant interpretation of Syrah from Washington, a state located in the northern part of the Pacific Coast. In 2013, after years dedicated to offering excellent Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines from the Willamette Valley in Oregon, the Bergstrom winery launched the 'Gargantua' line, created to enhance the expression of Syrah throughout the West Coast, from California to Washington, passing through the State of Oregon. The idea of focusing on this grape variety of Mediterranean origin stems from Bergstrom winery owner Josh Bergstrom's love for Syrah in all its expressions. The illustration on the label is then the work of artist Nat Meade, a long-time friend of Josh's.

Bergstrom's 'Gargantua Washington' Syrah is made from pure Syrah grapes from the 'Les Collines' vineyard, located in the Walla Walla area of Washington State. Here, the vines stand on erosive soils of glacial origin characterised by a high presence of loess, located at an altitude of 300 metres above sea level. Harvesting is done by hand and the grapes are then transferred to the cellar for whole cluster alcoholic fermentation with about 15 days of maceration on the skins. This is followed by malolactic fermentation and ageing for 12 months in used French oak barrels, followed by a further 12 months of bottle ageing.

The 'Gargantua Washington' Bergstrom Syrah is an intense, dark ruby red colour. The nose denotes sensations of flowers and berries that blend with spicy hints of pepper and hints of leather. Hints of aromatic herbs and chocolate complete the aromatic context. Structured but with excellent momentum on the palate, endowed with a juicy freshness and a perfectly integrated tannic texture that accompanies the long gustatory epilogue.
