Poppelvej's 'Somewhere' is a purer, lighter Syrah than you might think. Produced in Australia's Whites Valley in McLaren Vale, it comes from an early harvest in February, which gives the end result a unique freshness and vibrancy. Blackberries, raspberries, vanilla and smoked meats are the main aromas one will encounter once sipped, perhaps paired with medium-aged or mildly herbed cheeses
Poppelvej's Syrah 'Somewhere' constitutes a somewhat atypical interpretation of Australian Shiraz, all about fruit and smoothness. Syrah, known as Shiraz in Australia, is undoubtedly the country's most important variety, with about 25 percent of the total vineyard area dedicated to it. The first Syrah vines were important in Australian territory as early as 1832, specially selected from the best vineyards in the Rhone Valley. Although the characteristics of the wines produced vary from region to region, generally Australian Shiraz is characterized by full body and impressive structure, attributes that differ from those of 'Somewhere' Syrah. The appellation 'Somewhere' derives from the fact that when Danish-born winemaker Uffe Deichmann started his winemaking business he made wine inside an underground bunker, which was not approved by the Wine Council, so when people asked him where he made wine he used to answer "somewhere...."
Poppelvej 'Somewhere' Syrah represents a pure expression of the grape variety of the same name grown according to sustainable practices within the McLaren Vale area. Harvesting is done at an early time so as to preserve the organic acid content of the grapes, which are then vinified whole cluster in stainless steel tanks with spontaneous alcoholic fermentation, accompanied by 12 days of maceration on the skins. Finally, the mass is racked into oak barrels for aging for 8 months prior to bottling.
In the glass, Poppelvej's 'Somewhere' Syrah shows a bright purple-red coloration. The aromatic profile is outlined by clear sensations of berries such as blackberry, raspberry and strawberry, enriched by complex hints of vanilla and smoked meat. The palate is surprising in its lightness, with very lively freshness supporting the good overall structure, also defined by well-integrated tannin.
