The Torrette Superiore 'Ostro' from the Vallee d'Aostean winery Di Barrò expresses noteworthy concentration and intensity strongly linked to its territory of origin. The geographical mention Torrette, belonging to the Vallee d'Aoste appellation of controlled origin, requires the use of at least 70 per cent Petit Rouge, the region's most widespread grape variety. In addition, the label Superiore indicates a higher alcoholic strength and a slightly longer ageing period. The appellation of this label recalls the Ostro wind, otherwise known as Auster or Midday wind, as it blows from the south. In fact, this name was chosen to emphasise the southern exposure enjoyed by the vineyards.
Di Barrò Torrette Superiore 'Ostro' consists of a solid base of Petit Rouge, to which 10% of other red grapes are added. The vines are located at an altitude of 750 metres above sea level in the heart of the Torrette area, with southern exposure. Once fully ripe, the bunches are hand-picked and mellowed in stainless steel tanks for alcoholic fermentation in contact with the skins. Once the fermentation process is complete, the wine rests for a full 24 months in stainless steel until final bottling.
The Valle d'Aosta Torrette Superiore 'Ostro' from the Di Barrò estate reveals an intense and consistent ruby red colour in the glass. The nose evokes ample and decisive hints of red pulp fruit and bramble flowers, combined with balsamic and delicately spiced perceptions. Soft and enveloping the taste, endowed with a pleasant tannic texture and a long, balanced fruity finish. By virtue of its important structure, this red wine from Valle d'Aosta requires succulent and flavoursome pairings, such as red meat or game dishes.
