It is one of the most famous wineries in Umbria, a true oenological reference in Montefalco. It was founded in 1971 by Arnaldo Caprai, a successful textile entrepreneur with a dream to change his life and produce wine, realizing the great potential of a grape variety then unknown to the general public, Sagrantino. It will be his son Marco, starting in 1988, who will involve great personalities and professionals in the field to make the most of this native grape variety and make the Caprai winery the flagship and undisputed protagonist of its land. The great 1993 vintage represents the culmination of all of Marco's work and efforts, bringing him into the ranks of Italy's greatest producers.
Today the Arnaldo Caprai winery and Sagrantino di Montefalco are almost synonymous. Thanks to the great popularity achieved throughout the world, many producers have followed the example of this important production reality, and Sagrantino has rightfully entered the podium of Italy's great reds. This winery has shown how an ambitious dream could be transformed, by virtue of the deep connection with the history and particularities of the territory, into bottles of high value, also involving expressions of Montefalco Rosso and Grechetto.
All Caprai wines are born in a modern and functional underground cellar, completely renovated in 1997. Here there are steel tanks for fermentation and many oak barrels for aging: 2,000 French barriques from Allier, Nievre and Vosges and 15 large Slavonian oak barrels. The goal of this work is the same as thirty years ago: to bet on the great richness of Montefalco's tradition, recovering it in a modern key. Technology, expertise, experimentation and innovation combine to create powerful, full-bodied and long-lived reds with great personality. The numerous recognitions obtained make this winery a true symbol of excellence in the Umbrian territory, an unmissable mark in the discovery of a grape variety capable of exciting like few others, that Sagrantino taken to the highest levels of quality.
