Piercarlo Carcereri is an artisan winemaker and creator of small wine treasures that are born in the area of Soave, Veneto, from a production philosophy in symbiosis with the environment and the land. We are in Colognola ai Colli, just 7 kilometres west of the town of Soave, a place where Piercarlo has taken up a tradition started in the early 1900s by his great-grandfather, who was dedicated to wine production in the area. Piercarlo adopts artisanal practices both in the vineyard and in the cellar, setting himself up as an example of genuineness, far from fashions and conformism.
The vineyard area available to Piercarlo Carcereri amounts to just over one hectare, with Garganega, Trebbiano di Soave and Malvasia di Candia vines grown using the double pergola system. These are old vines over 70 years old cultivated on volcanic soil, excluding the use of pesticides, herbicides and other synthetic chemicals, with the utmost respect for environmental health. Piercarlo harvests entirely by hand, with fermentation being entrusted solely to the yeasts present on the grapes and in the vinification environment, with maceration on the skins for all white grapes. A combination of cement vats, steel tanks and wooden tonneaux is adopted as containers, seeking the right compromise between the characteristics given by each wine vessel. Throughout the entire process, the use of enzymes and oenological aids is banned, as is the use of clarification or filtration, in absolute respect for the unique expression of the terroir.
This is how Piercarlo Carcereri's very small production takes shape, a production that counts a few thousand bottles per year of a single label: an orange wine with a vibrant and energetic character. This macerated white, named after the producer himself, then manages to combine substance and verticality, structure and freshness in a surprising manner, resulting in a wine that is able to impress from the very first sip.
