The Gruber Roschitz winery is a historic establishment in Lower Austria, which is located in the western part of the Weinviertel wine region. The estate has been in operation since 1814 and in those days, like all the wineries of the time, the wine was sold privately in bulk to inns and friends. However, its growing success and high demand transformed the winery into a commercial business in 1964. Today, the three Gruber siblings, Ewald, Maria and Christian, are at the helm of the winery. They have decided to embark on a new path, focusing on environmental sustainability and product quality, using organic methods in the vineyard that respect nature. These three young people play three different roles in the winery. Ewald is the enologist, a conscious experimenter who does not like to intervene in processes; Maria, on the other hand, is in charge of marketing and customer and international relations; and finally Christian, who is in close contact with nature in the vineyard and follows the growth of the grapes. Everyone contributes to the unique quality of this estate in a different way.
The 150 vineyards extend around the village of Roschitz for about 80 hectares, and are located between 250 and 360 metres above sea level. The small village lies at the foot of the Manhartsberg mountain range, on the eastern slopes, where the environmental conditions are perhaps among the best in Austria for growing grapes. The soil is shallow, dry and mainly rocky with granite, loess and crystalline substrate. The grapes ripen slowly, the yields are low, the rainfall is infrequent, the days are warm and the nights are very cold. Quality is guaranteed and success is assured. The varieties grown belong to Austria's long and centuries-old winemaking tradition and include primarily Riesling, followed by Veltliner, Pinot Noir and, in increasingly smaller quantities, Merlot, Muskateller, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Zweigelt, Merlot and St. Laurent.
The Roschitz range includes reds, whites, rosés and sparkling wines that are divided into different lines: Vineyard designated, Roschitz, Classics, Sparkling, Extrem vineyard and Black vintage. These are original and amusing collector's bottles, which are made even more fascinating by the beautiful "little monsters" drawn on each label. The differences between microclimate, vineyards and terroir render Gruber Roschitz wines unique and completely diverse. They range from fruity and elegant expressions to full-bodied and profound ones, all of which are characterised by the unmistakable mineral note that is typical of this prestigious area.
