Giovanni Montisci winery is based in Mamoiada, in the heart of Barbagia, about 600 meters above sea level, a strong and hard region, which is swept by Mistral and parched by the sun. Giovanni Montisci, former mechanic, about twenty years ago inherited from her mother-in-law 2-hectare of abandoned vineyard and decided to change his life and start a new business: wine grower and producer of a wine that would contain all the uniqueness of Barbagia. The road was long and hard, but Giovanni did not give up, with courage and perseverance restored old Canonau plants, keeping some plants older than 80 years and planting others younger; for 15 years he attended two winemaker friends and their wineries to learn all the secrets of the art of wine making.
After several years of locally selling bulk wine, in 2004 Giovanni bottled his first 700 bottles and called his wine "Barrosu" which in dialect means "bold", just like they said when friends tasted his wine: the arrogant "Barrosu" in 2005 get the DOC. Giovanni’s belief is simple: no chemicals in the vineyard, only native yeasts, no sulfur, no filter and waiting for the moment when the wine is ready for bottling.
This is how Giovanni Montisci got the organic certification. The production today is about 6,000 bottles per year, all numbered: 4,500 of Barrosu, thousand of Barrosu Reserve and a thousand of Rosé. Giovanni’s Barrosu has crossed the borders of Sardinia and has obtained numerous awards in Italy and abroad.
