Poderi Aldo Conterno represents one of the most renowned and appreciated wineries in the Langhe, a land that it has contributed to enhancing through its fine and elegant Barolo wines. The winery is located in Monforte d'Alba, in Bussia, a unique place that the Conterno family has been cultivating since the 1800s. Following a five-year experience in California, and after working for some time with his father Giacomo and brother Giovanni at the family winery, Aldo Conterno matured the desire to start his own estate, which was officially founded in 1969. Today, the Poderi Aldo Conterno winery is run by Aldo's sons Franco, Stefano and Giacomo, who, on the strength of the family's long winemaking tradition, continue to nurture the noble path traced by their ancestors.
The vineyards of the Poderi Aldo Conterno estate are spread over 25 hectares, dedicated almost exclusively to Nebbiolo. The vines are situated between 350 and 400 metres above sea level and rest on soils composed of clayey marl and limestone, with the presence of layers of sand. The cornerstone of the Conterno's production philosophy is to express the truest and most identifiable character of the terroir, while at the same time protecting the health of the ecosystem. With this in mind, fertilisers and herbicides are not used, while only copper and sulphur are used for phytosanitary treatments. The very low yield of grapes per hectare then allows the grapes to be harvested at the perfect state of ripeness and with an extraordinary concentration of phenolic substances. Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand, accompanied by strict sorting of the bunches, and the oenological approach is traditional. Furthermore, during the entire process the red wines are not subjected to clarification or filtration.
The Poderi Aldo Conterno winery has prestigious crus of sublime vocation, such as Romirasco, Cicala and Colonello, all located within the Additional Geographical Mention of Bussia in Monforte d'Alba. From these celebrated vineyards come Barolo wines with a classic and austere style, endowed with imposing structure and exquisite elegance. The Riserva 'Granbussia' deserves a separate mention, produced only in exceptional vintages through a selection of the best grapes from the Bussia vineyards.
