BAROLO BUSSIA 'COLONNELLO' ALDO CONTERNO 2019 DESCRIPTION

The celebrated Langhe winery Poderi Aldo Conterno presents its Barolo Bussia 'Colonnello', an austere and lordly expression of one of the most important cru in Monforte d'Alba. The Colonnello vineyard represents one of the three crus cultivated by the estate, all located within the Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva of Bussia in Monforte d'Alba. It seems that the appellation 'Colonnello' derives from a legend according to which a colonel of Napoleon's troops, who had retired from service after years of battles, began making wine in this very land, fascinated by the enchanting landscape.
Poderi Aldo Conterno's Barolo Bussia 'Colonnello' originates only from Nebbiolo grapes, of the sub-varieties Michet and Lampia, grown in the Colonnello vineyard in Bussia on clayey-calcareous soil, rich in calcium carbonate and iron. The vines have an average age of 40-45 years and are located between 350 and 400 metres above sea level. Once the grapes have reached the perfect degree of ripeness, they are harvested by hand and carefully selected. They are then mellowed in stainless steel tanks for the alcoholic fermentation associated with approximately one month of contact between the must and the skins. Once the fermentation and maceration process is complete, the mass is racked several times before being transferred into large Slavonian oak casks where it remains to age for a good 30 months before bottling.
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Bussia 'Colonnello' expresses a luminous garnet red colour. The olfactory panorama is complex, varied and elegant, described by scents of red fruits, plum, powder, balsamic herbs and liquorice, supported by hints of iron minerals and deep notes of leather and tobacco. The sip, warm and robust, reveals juicy freshness and intense tannic texture, with an irresistibly persistent, spicy finish.
