Catarratto Maugeri 2023

Maugeri's Catarratto is a vibrant, living white, a full example of Etna's power. It is born 700 metres above sea level, on the terraces of Contrada Volpare and fully expresses the volcanic character of the territory. The nose offers delicate notes of white flowers, white-fleshed fruit and aromatic herbs. The palate is intense, characterised by a vibrant freshness and a persistent, very savoury finish

CATARRATTO MAUGERI 2023 DESCRIPTION

The Catarratto of the Sicilian estate Maugeri represents an interpretation of the white berry variety of the same name that originates on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, resulting in a white wine with a distinctive mineral tone. The guide of the Maugeri winery is in the hands of a close-knit family team, composed by Renato Maugeri and his daughters Carla, Michela and Paola, who in 2020 bottled the first vintage after having committed to recovering the old abandoned vineyards of the family. The seat of this small reality, composed of just 7 hectares of vineyards, is the municipality of Milo, located on the eastern side of Etna, in a territory strongly oriented to the production of white wine.

Catarratto Maugeri is produced with pure Catarratto grapes grown in Contrada Volpare, within the municipality of Milo, on north facing terraces supported by dry stone walls in lava stone. Here the plants are raised in small trees following the principles of certified organic farming, at an altitude of 700 meters above sea level on volcanic sandy soils rich in mineral substances. The harvest is carried out by hand in the first ten days of October and is followed by soft pressing of the grapes and a short cryo-maceration. Both the alcoholic fermentation and the 4 months of ageing on fine lees take place in steel and only after a short rest in bottle is the wine finally ready for market.

The Catarratto from the Maugeri winery has a bright straw yellow color. The aromatic bouquet is described by intense hints of apple and pear that are combined with hints of peach and honeysuckle, as well as hints of Mediterranean scrub and distinct mineral puffs iodised. The palate is very fresh and impressive, with a progression that rests on a persistent and savory development, almost salty.
