"Rocca de Piro" is an elegant and full-bodied expression of Valtellina Superiore Grumello Riserva: an intense red wine aged for 24 months in large oak and chestnut barrels. Hints of cherries, violets, berries, licorice and sweet spices harmonize with each other with elegance and precision. The sip is full-bodied and rich, with vibrant freshness and flavor
Grumello Rocca de Piro tells the story of the deep bond that unites Ar.Pe.Pe. with the harsh territory of Valtellina, where rows of vines Chiavennasca, native ecotype of Nebbiolo, protrude from the verdant terraces carved with efforts and time by the heroic work of the local vintners. The production history of Ar.Pe.Pe looks like this rugged territory, rising among the most important winemakers in the Valtellina scene from the late nineteenth century until the middle of the last century, and then got into the hands of foreign investors because of a dispute among the heirs and subsequently returned to its former luster thanks to the founder's grandson, Arturo Pelizzatti Perego (whose name the acronym of the company derives from).
Choosing the more difficult road, Arturo has reconstituted the ancient family estate, getting back to make wine in the historical cellars of Buon Consiglio built by his father, seconding traditional techniques, which contemplate a long aging well above the requirements of the denomination for the Nebbiolo in order to ensure optimal development and proper expression of the terroir before the release on the market.
All this can be applied to Grumello Rocca de Piro, which takes its name from the historic promontory on which the Ar.Pe.Pe. vines are climb just above the cellar of the family and next to the homonymous medieval castle that dominates the surrounding landscape: with a resolute elegance expressing the most authentic characteristics of the Nebbiolo grape, Grumello Rocca de Piro of Ar.Pe.Pe. keeps alive in its surprisingly fresh hints, with an acidity wisely dispensed.
