Merlot Bergmannhof 2023

The Bergmannhof Merlot is a soft red wine with a distinct mountain character. After a long maceration, the wine then matures for almost a year in medium-sized barrels until bottling in late spring. Intense hints of dark fruit such as plum and blueberry meet a juicy, velvety palate with a savoury, clean profile typical of mountain wines. Perfect with grilled meats or mature cheeses

MERLOT BERGMANNHOF 2023 DESCRIPTION

The Merlot Bergmannhof is a label produced in South Tyrol with a full, smooth taste, yet not without freshness. The Pichler family, which has been involved in the production of the Bergmannhof wine cellar for three generations, operates in the municipality of Eppan on the Wine Road, a place that, as the name itself suggests, has a well-established winegrowing tradition. This municipality comprises several localities, such as San Michele, San Paolo, Cornaiano, Riva di Sotto, Frangarto, Missiano, Predonico and Gaido. Of these, San Paolo stands out for its prestige and oenological vocation, and it is here that most of the vineyards owned by Bergmannhof are located.

Bergmannhof Alto Adige Merlot is made exclusively from grapes of the black berry variety of the same name grown in the area of San Paolo, a hamlet of the municipality of Appiano. The vines, cultivated using environmentally sustainable practices, are planted on clay and limestone soils rich in gravel and skeleton. Following manual harvesting, the grapes are transferred to the cellar and placed in wooden barrels, containers in which spontaneous alcoholic fermentation takes place accompanied by 2-3 weeks of maceration on the skins. Malolactic fermentation is carried out and the wine is then placed to age for 13 months in large oak casks and 500-litre tonneaux, followed by a further adequate resting period in the bottle before final release.

The colour of Bergmannhof's Sudtirol Merlot is a dark ruby red. The nose reveals intense fruity aromas of blackberry, blueberry and black plum, combined with ample perceptions of clove and vanilla provided by the passage in oak. Full-bodied and very soft taste development, chiselled by the silky tannic texture that accompanies the pleasant freshness in a crisp finish, in which the sensations of black fruits perceived on the nose reappear.

When to drink
Wine good to drink now, but that can have a beautiful evolution after resting for a while in your cellar
Glass
Medium open goblet
Perfect for young and medium bodied red wines which don't require excessive oxygenation to open. The opening, slightly tighter than the body of the glass, favors the concentration of aromas towards the nose, enhancing the perception of aromas and limiting the dispersion
Longevity
You can let it rest in the cellar quietly for 3-4 years
