ETNA ROSSO 'PASSOROSSO' PASSOPISCIARO 2022 DESCRIPTION

Passopisciaro's Etna Rosso 'Passorosso' is a Sicilian wine that originates in an area that is often overlooked for wine production, but which in recent years has proved to be ideal for the production of qualitatively impeccable wines. In 2000 Andrea Franchetti began working the land on the slopes of Etna, in the hamlet of Passopisciaro from which the winery takes its name. The vineyards are then subdivided into different districts, all cultivated according to the natural rhythms of growth and development of the plants and the raw material; they are also laid out on terraces that make viticulture impervious, but this does not preclude the final product from having great expressiveness and personality.

The Nerello Mascalese grapes in Passopisciaro's Etna Rosso 'Passorosso' grow on vines that are up to a century old and some of them boast of not having been affected by phylloxera in the early 20th century. The climate is characterised by cool, mild summers and harsh winters; the cold winds contribute to significant temperature swings between day and night that ensure perfect ripening of the grapes at harvest time. The soil of the Malpasso, Lavazza, Arcuria and Feudo di Mezzo districts is characterised by the presence of volcanic ash, microelements and minerals, deriving from lava flows, even recent ones. Work in the vineyard involves the use of sulphur dust, clay and propolis, avoiding the use of pesticides and synthetic chemicals. Harvesting is manual and the grapes ferment for about 15 days and then age for 18 months in large oak barrels.

To the eye, the Etna Rosso 'Passorosso' Magnum from Passopisciaro has a ruby red colour with garnet shades. The nose reveals aromas of wild berries such as blackcurrant and blackberry, ash and spicy notes of star anise and sandalwood; on the palate it is intense, enveloping and energetic with well-integrated tannin in the overall structure and a pleasant final persistence for a gratifying drink. In pairing it is recommended with grilled and stewed red meat dishes and game; also perfect with medium-mature cow's milk cheeses. To be reserved for formal occasions with work colleagues or for summer barbecues in the company of friends, enjoying an authentic product made in a responsible manner.
