Meaterra is an artisanal winery committed to enhancing themost genuine expression of the Marsala area, home of the estate. The soul of the winery is Antonino Barraco, known as 'Nino', a winemaker who has been producing territorial wines since 2004 in Contrada Bausa, 20 minutes north-east of the town of Marsala. Going against the trend of the area's production, centred on fortified wines, Nino decided to embrace an ancestral vision of wine, recovering ancient traditions and grape varieties that had almost been put aside in the area. His business began with the amalgamation of his family's vineyards, which had been devoted to wine production for generations, and those of his wife, who has accompanied him on his adventure for over 20 years.
The vineyard area of the Meaterra estate extends over 12 hectares, entirely managed under a certified organic system. The vines, lapped by the strong hot winds that blow through the land, are up to 50 years old and stand on sandy soils at an altitude ranging from sea level to 120 metres. On the strength of these environmental parameters, Antonino Barraco exclusively grows traditional Sicilian varieties such as Catarratto, Grillo, Zibibibbo, Pignatello and Nero d'Avola. Harvesting is carried out strictly by hand and in the cellar fermentation is entrusted to the exclusive intervention of indigenous yeasts, using only steel as the wine container, in order not to alter the identity of the land and the original vines. In addition, the use of sulphur dioxide is reduced to the minimum necessary and the use of clarification or filtration is excluded. For bottle-fermented wines, the technique of the Ancestral Method is implemented, which consists of bottling the must-wine when the fermentation process is not yet completely finished, so that the slight frothing takes place directly in the bottle, without the addition of exogenous sugars.
Meaterra's wines stand out for their savoury and marine character, with great impact and personality, the result of Antonino's philosophy based on exalting the most authentic face of the territory.
