The Avignonesi winery was founded in 1974 and is located in the Tuscan Vino Nobile DOCG region of Montepulciano. The winery took a new direction in 2009 when it was purchased by Virginie Saverys, a Belgian businesswoman, who was supported by a team of motivated young people, such as agronomist Alessio Gorini and enologist Matteo Giustiniani. Virginie immediately made a shift towards natural agriculture, using an organic and biodynamic approach, in harmony with the environment. This approach is challenging given the winery's 200 hectares of vineyards, but her courage has already yielded excellent results.
The Avignonesi estate is divided between eight vineyards in Montepulciano and two in Cortona, with different soils that allow for variety and experimentation in the vineyard. The philosophy behind the work in the vineyard is totally focused on respecting the environment, using biodynamic preparations to avoid the introduction of copper and sulphur into the soil as much as possible. Herbicides, pesticides and chemical fertilisers are completely banned, replaced by green manure and phytotherapeutic infusions capable of strengthening the vine's natural defences.
Avignonesi's wines, thanks to their organic and biodynamic conversion, are improving year after year, with ever broader aromas and flavours that are very faithful to the territory. The cellar, located on the Lodola estate, houses both large Slavonian oak barrels and French oak barriques. The vinsantaia, on the other hand, where the Vin Santo and Occhio di Pernice mature in "caratelli", is located on the Le Capezzine estate. These are wines of great personality and balance, with a range of Rossi and Nobili di Montepulciano products of excellent quality. The Vin Santo is simply extraordinary and is a must for true connoisseurs.
