The Cavalchina winery was founded at the beginning of the 20th century by the Piona family in Custoza, south-east of the Garda morainic amphitheatre, in an area historically famous, in addition to the battles of the Risorgimento, for the production of excellent wines. The winery, which is named after the ancient owners of the land on which it stands, the Cavalchini counts, and which at the same time alludes to a Venetian carnival ball, has shaped the history of the area: it was in 1962 when, for the first time, Giulietto Piona inaugurated the term 'Custoza' for a wine, a term that would become DOC ten years later.
Today, the winery's land covers a total of 50 hectares, immersed in optimal climatic conditions and suited to quality production. The vineyards in the Custoza area are rooted in pebbly soils, rich in gravel and minerals. Since 2000, the vineyard estate has expanded to include land in Valpolicella and the province of Mantua. Everything is managed by Luciano, also president of the consortium for the protection of Custoza, and Franco Piona, guided by rules that they have set themselves and that they do not seem willing to deviate from: quality in the vineyard, quality of the vines and quality in the wine-making process. The harvest is carried out by hand in several stages, selecting only perfectly ripe bunches. In the winery, the approach is to maintain as much as possible of the natural characteristics of the harvested grapes.
The ideas behind the Cavalchina winery's production allow for the creation of wines with a precise imprint, which focuses on cleanliness, immediacy and great drinking pleasure. Custoza Superiore "Amedeo", for example, dedicated to the memory of Amedeo di Savoia, who was wounded on the battlefield of Custoza during the Third War of Independence, is known to all lovers of good wine, and has received important and prestigious awards for its fresh and refined taste.
